We renovated the entirety of the landscape at Peter Cooper Village in New York City, from 1st Avenue to Avenue C and from 20th to 23rd Street in 2012. In the initial phase of the project, we began with segmented demolition. We added soil amendments, closely supervising the process of planting trees, shrubs and perennials. We provided irrigation and installed lush lawns and fencing while remaining respectful to the community’s residents.
Shortly after this renovation, superstorm Hurricane Sandy hit the tristate area, the East River engulfing our gorgeous new renovation at Peter Cooper Village. In the spirit that has defined Greengage for over half of a century, we rolled up our sleeves and restored the project back to its initial beauty.
At the Giovanni, a luxury apartment development in Brooklyn, Greengage developed everything from outdoor living spaces to street-level and rooftop gardens. We installed custom fiberglass planters and 180 yards of lightweight green-roof soil; planted trees, shrubs and perennials; and implemented irrigation systems. For the past four years, we have maintained the property’s street-level and terrace gardens, in addition to seasonal planting beds for residential interest and beautification of property.
At the Margo, a luxury residential building in Brooklyn, we:
• Installed the structural framework and green-wall modules
• Planted allotment gardens with recycled plastic lumber
• Installed an aluminum edging on top of cast-in-place concrete curbs
to contain soil for a lush sod lawn
• Installed stainless steel cables fastened to a brick wall created
a trellis to support floriferous climbing roses
• Used custom fiberglass planters
• Planted trees, shrubs and perennials blooming on the third-floor setback.
For four years, we have been committed to the landscape maintenance of the Margo’s greenwall and setbacks, in addition to maintaining the planting beds with seasonal color and design refreshes—embellishing while preserving the prestige of the building. Greengage transformed the Margo’s outdoor space into a modern urban garden that captivates residents and passersby alike.
Greengage is proud of our work on the rooftop and terrace at The Eagle, a 33-story residential development located in Downtown Brooklyn. A multifaceted project, we transformed the building’s outdoor spaces with our signature custom-tailored approach. During the planting phase at The Eagle, we installed cast-in-place concrete curbing and aluminum edging, forming the planting beds. We planted certified-organic vegetables using recycled plastic lumber for residents to enjoy. On the ground level, Greengage used synthetic grass designed specifically for dogs; on the roof, we constructed a 450-foot wood screen from aluminum posts and cumaru for privacy and noise control. Topping out at 33 floors, the rooftop garden affords amazing views. Adding to the building’s sustainable features, we installed custom recycled plastic lumber planters containing allotment gardens in the second-floor amenity space.
Greengage is honored to have executed the complete landscape renovation at St. Paul’s Chapel, a New York City institution with a rich history. Our work at this cultural site included everything from replacing the walkways with three-inch-thick imported brownstone pavers, installing world’s fair benches, irrigation and checking the dams for erosion. We added rumble strip blue-stone meandering pathways throughout the grounds, amended the soil; planted trees, shrubs and perennials; as well as the seed for the lawn space. We planted the larger trees during overnight shifts, seeing through the completion of this project through our industry-leading means and methods.
This renovation project was an emotionally charged one, the church serving as a place of refuge and recovery for first responders and workers at the World Trade Center site. We had goosebumps seeing scratches on the pews from workers’ equipment. Working at such a sensitive cultural site required not only the dedication and diligence that we are known for, but also respect and for the space and the weight of its historical significance.
Juan Pablo Duarte Square Park, often referred to as Duarte Square, is a wonderful triangular park in Lower Manhattan that Greengage is honored to have worked on. The scope of our work includes everything from the demolition of the site, removal of existing planting to the installation of NYC curb trees, planters and NYC Department of Transportation-approved asphalt with thermo-plastic paint. We painted hopscotch, checkers, and a various children’s street games, encouraging sports and recreational activities in the community. Our crew planted shrubs and perennials throughout, as well as raised planting beds. Today, Duarte Square is a place of respite within the hustle and bustle of city life and we are proud to have contributed to its beauty and the sense of community it inspires.
Built on the site of an iconic Manhattan flea market, One Great Jones Alley is a luxury boutique residential condominium in New York City’s NoHo neighborhood. Greengage installed custom-built exotic wood planters; planted trees, shrubs and perennials; installed corten steel constellation walls, installed custom benches and water features with stainless steel scuppers, in addition to irrigation.
Everything in the world that is beautiful displays contract. The English ivy against the corten steel wall exemplifies contrast in its finest form. We have maintained this property to not only keep with the initial design intent but provided pruning to insure both the aesthetics and privacy of the residents for their outdoor patio space. On the upper tier terraces a manicured appearance was provided by our team as a key to give residents the park-like feel in a heavy traveled section of Brooklyn.
At Ocean Dreams, a beachfront, Miami-style building, Greengage proudly transformed the outdoor amenity space. We formed and poured concrete curbs and filled planting beds with 900 cubic yards of lightweight greenroof soil. To expedite the process, we utilized two blower trucks simultaneously and boomed up all materials—trees, shrubs, grasses, sod and synthetic turf. We built a pergola, a bocce court, exercise and recreational equipment, an outdoor kitchen, a life-size chess board and a putting green.
